Dear current and former residents and friends of Winifred,
Each of us holds a special place in our heart for the town and
community of Winifred. It’s our home, our hometown, or a place
that has captured our passion during our travels. Because of our
fondness for this little town at the end of the pavement, we
aspire to contribute to the economic success of the Winifred
community.
Winifred is, and always will be, a town whose economy is
focused on agriculture. The benefits of being a community
rooted in this way of life are well known to anybody reading this
letter. However, today’s economic realities do present an
ominous downside.
With each passing year, production agriculture is able to support
fewer and fewer people. Tractors and farms/ranches get
bigger, best practices get better, and it simply takes fewer
people to work the land. As a result, production agriculture
alone is not able to support community populations like it did for
past generations, and small towns and Class C schools across
Montana are shrinking with each passing year.
Winifred will be the exception. But this will be achieved only
through the proactive efforts of a lot of passionate people. As
we come up on Winifred’s 100th birthday in 2013, it is our
charge to expand the economic diversity of Winifred to assure
that this town we love will be standing tall for another 100 years
and beyond, so that our grandchildren and great-grandchildren
can share our love for the community that has given so much to
each of us.
At each Winifred High School all-class reunion, when Winifred
explodes into a small city, we have the opportunity to visit with
so many interesting people who live in Winifred and all around
the world. It is then that we are reminded how many amazingly
talented and passionate people call Winifred their hometown.
We need to leverage the talents and resources of all of these
people to work toward a common goal: the continued prosperity
of Winifred.
We have developed a framework to help grow and diversify
the economy of Winifred, and we have named it “Winifred
2113.” This plan represents a vision of Winifred’s economic
success not only in the coming decades, but on through its
200th birthday in the year 2113 and beyond.
Please review the enclosed documents for more details about
Winifred 2113 and how it will function to bring more jobs and
business opportunities to Winifred. If you want to be a part of
this effort in any way, no matter how large or how small,

information. Working together and combining all of our skills,

We are very excited to kick off this effort, and we look forward

be interested. As we have already learned, one will never
cease to be surprised how many people are willing to lend their
skills and resources to efforts of community pride, so we need
to make those opportunities available to as many people as
possible.
